Last Friday we had some Halloween Math Centres. We had the following centres:

1. Sand Centre

2. Spin Centre

3. Dice Centre

4. Bingo Centre

5. Meet the Teacher Centre

Thank you to all our parent volunteers! Without you we wouldn't be able to do such fun centres.

Can you match up the centre pictures with what centre they are?

Daily 5 - First Time

On Tuesday we had Daily 5 for the first time. Daily 5 are alphabet literacy centres. There are supposed to be 5 centres but we just did 4 centres yesterday due to time restrictions.

The AM class had the following centres:

1. Word Work
At this centres students chose a lowercase alphabet letter at random and found it on our alphabet at the front of the room. They sang the alphabet until they reached that letter to figure out what letter it is. Then, they told the parent helper the sound and what letter it is. Next, they get to put rocks on the letter. This may seem odd, but it helps children learn the space and shape of the letter.

2. Listen to Reading
At this centre, students listened to a parent volunteer read stories to them in the hallway. When reading stories, comprehension is very important. Ask questions before, during and after reading the story to make sure your child understands the story.

3. Work on Writing
At this centre students worked in their journals. They found words on the word wall and practiced printing them and drawing them.

4. Meet the Teacher
At this centre students met with myself (Mrs. Jackson) and we practiced making letters in the sand. I would say a sound (i.e. "sssss") and students had to write the lowercase letter in the sand. Sand is very forgiving. When mistakes are made, it's very easy to simply slide the sand back and forth to erase it.

Math Centres

Today we had math centres for the first time and it was a big hit in Kindergarten!

The students were very ecstatic about new, halloween centres.

Today we had four centres:
1. Meet with the teacher
Today we learned how to sort. Sorting means putting things into groups based on similar attributes. We sorted objects into groups of colour or shapes - check out seesaw to see your child's sorting.

2. Spin Centre
At this centre students spun a spinner and had to put that many spiders on a ten frame. The first one to get to 10 wins and then you start over.

3. Dice Centre
Students rolled one die and had to cover that number with a bingo chip.

4. Marker Centre
At this centre students counted and coloured the correct number.
